The History Behind the Stuffed Animal Bear

Our Affordable Toy Stores have one set of products that fly off the shelves, and that is the teddy bear. We were curious as to how teddy bears came to be. It especially got me wondering as my roommate still takes his Teddy, back from his early years to bed with him!
The first Teddy Bear was originally inspired by the 26th President of the United States of America, Theodore “Teddy” Roosevelt Jr. It was officially made by Rose and Morris Michtom, but was inspired by a certain hunting incident, involving Roosevelt and Clifford Berryman and here’s what happened;|

On November 14th, 1902 President Roosevelt travelled to Mississippi to settle an argument over bordering lands between Mississippi and Louisiana. Whilst there a hunting trip was arranged and as a surprise,  the hunting team tied a black bear cub to a tree for the President to shoot. However, refusing Roosevelt did not want to shoot the defenceless bear. Word had spread back to town, and local political cartoonist, Clifford Berryman drew an illustration. Which displayed Roosevelt, refusing to hurt the little bear combined with a witty caption reading ‘Drawing the line in Mississippi'.  Which cleverly referred to both the hunting incident as well as the borderland dispute.
The cartoon shown in the paper sparked the imagination of the country as well as a shopkeeper in Brooklyn New York, Morris Michtom. He requested his wife Rose, to make two stuffed bears and display them in his shop window. So, with her delicate yet superb skills they were made and placed in the shop window, as requested. The popularity of these beautifully made stuffed bears with little black shoe buttons for eyes engaged the nation. Morris also desired to share the success with the origin of his idea. So, he asked Roosevelt if he could name them after him, to which he agreed and thus the Teddy Bear was born!
Today we have many Bear Stuffed Animals, from Mickey Mouse Toys for Toddlers to other soft toys for babies. Again, a huge thanks to Christine Davidson, the other inspiration for this article was due to her question about; ‘Where do stuffed bears come from?’ I think she might have meant where in the world – in short, they mainly come from China! But we hope you enjoyed this trip into history anyway!
